Our History

The club was formed in 1966 and called the Tweed Valley Junior Tennis Association. They had no courts of their own or clubhouse, and the local high school made their courts available every weekend. Membership grew quickly and in 1973 a loan from the Tweed Shire Council allowed the club to build 4 clay courts and a small clubhouse where Court numbers 1 to 4 are now located. At this point the Association was absorbed into the Tweed Heads Tennis Club Inc.

Tennis participation was outgrowing the existing facilities and in 1979 four more clay courts were added on the other side of the clubhouse, these being the current court numbers 5 to 8. Then in 1982, the existing two story clubhouse building was constructed, a major improvement at the time. In 1987 and 1988, all 8 courts were resurfaced with Omni court synthetic grass, as well as new fencing and lighting installed. Player numbers continued to increase and the demand for more courts led to courts 9 & 10 being constructed in 1991, court 11 in 1996 and court 12 in 1998.

In 2014, the club’s facilities were expanded to include 8 hardcourts for tournament play and as well as a new pro shop, playground and BBQ area. This was part of a total expansion of the Arkinstall Park sporting area by Tweed Shire Council which also included netball courts and soccer fields.

All of the expansions prior to 2014 were financed from club funds, with small loans from Council and banks, as well as NSW Government grants. Many club members gave their time and energy in raising funds through raffles, canteens, and donations, as well as serving on the committee.

Of all the members who contributed, Noel Robinson was prominent as the one who started the club in 1966 and being instrumental in the accomplishment of the first 20 years of the above works. He was made a Life Member of the club in 1976 and in 1988, the whole complex was officially named the ‘Noel Robinson Courts’.

Other life members of the club include Ray Barrenger 1982, Bob Linaker 1985, Beryl Natoli 1996, Geoff Brown 1998, Barbara Dowling 2002, Bert Swain 2004, Merle Graham 2005, Lorraine Waterson 2011, Doug Watterson 2012, Jill Sheils 2013, Gary Wilson 2014, Bob Tindale 2016, Virginia Tindale 2017, Margaret Radcliffe 2020, and Rick Harley 2021.

The Tweed Heads tennis Club is located at Arkinstall Park, Tweed Heads South. Jack Arkinstall (8 November 1925 – 25 May 2000) was an Australian tennis player. He was a quarter-finalist at the 1962 U.S. Pro Tennis Championships.[1] He was active on the ILTF World Circuit from 1946 to 1958, then on the Pro Tennis Tour until 1962,[1] and won 60 amateur and professional singles titles.[1] Jack's younger brother, Neville, was a talented sportsman in his own right, being accomplished as a hockey and cricket player as well as tennis. Arkinstall Park sports centre was named in honour of the Arkinstall family.
